PATIENT INFORMATION
What acupuncture involves, how to prepare and what to do after treatment.
A practitioner uses very fine needles to stimulate selected areas of skin and tissue. Modern research considers nervous-system, tissue and contextual effects; its mechanisms are not fully understood.
Research supports benefits for some pain conditions, including back or neck pain, knee osteoarthritis and some headaches. Evidence differs by condition, and improvement is not guaranteed. Ask how it fits alongside your usual care.
You may notice a brief prick, ache or warmth. Tell your practitioner about sharp pain or discomfort so the treatment can be adjusted.
Weekly intervals are common. Your practitioner may discuss a different schedule, including twice weekly, after assessing your condition. There is no single frequency for every patient.
Start with clear goals and a review point. Continue, space out or stop visits according to your response. Track comfort and everyday function between sessions rather than assuming more treatment is always better.
Minor bleeding, bruising, temporary soreness or light-headedness can occur. Infection or organ injury is rare but possible. Needles must be sterile and single use. Share your medical history and ask about alternatives.
Your practitioner records the visit, your reported symptoms, clinical observations, treatment and the next plan. Follow-up visits review what changed and whether care should continue.
Wear clothing that makes the treatment area easy to access. Eat before the visit, especially if you have diabetes. Bring a medication list.
Discuss pregnancy, blood-thinning medicines, bleeding conditions, implants, allergies, infections and changes in your health. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
Your practitioner should explain the plan, possible benefits, risks and alternatives. Ask questions before giving consent. You can pause or decline treatment.
Rest briefly if you feel sleepy. Avoid driving while drowsy or dizzy. Follow the instructions your practitioner gives for your situation.
Note your symptoms, daily activity and any reactions before your next appointment. Share worsening pain or persistent problems with the clinic.
Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, breathing difficulty, severe illness or uncontrolled bleeding after treatment. Contact your usual healthcare professional for new or concerning symptoms.
General educational information; your practitioner will discuss care for your individual circumstances. Acupuncture should not delay necessary medical evaluation.
